Park the car on a level surface and wait about 30 minutes for the engine to cool. Raise the front of the car on a pair of jack stands. Slide underneath the Nissan and locate the transmission drain pan in the center of the transmission, the large metal tank surrounded by eight bolts. Place a collection pan beneath the transmission drain pan to catch the used Transmission Fluid as it falls.
Remove all the bolts except one surrounding the tank with a 1/2-inch socket wrench. Let the fluid drain into the collection pan until it stops dripping out of the transmission. This generally takes about 10 to 15 minutes. Remove the final bolt and lower the remaining fluid into the collection pan. Wash the drain pan and the bolts with soap and water to remove any fluid residue.
Locate the used transmission filter beneath the drain pan. Remove the three bolts connecting it to the transmission with the socket wrench. Place the new filter on the transmission and attach the old bolts. Replace the drain pan and lower the car from the jack stands.
Pop the hood of the Nissan by pulling the hood-release lever underneath the steering panel. Find the transmission dipstick above the drain pan. Pull it out and place a funnel in the tube. Pour in three quarts of transmission fluid into the funnel, then reinsert the dipstick and close the hood.
the transmission filter is on the inside of the transmission
The 1990 Nissan Maxima came equipped with the 3.0L V6 and the RE4F02A automatic transmission. This type of transmission requires a professional tear down and overhaul to remove and replace the transmission filter assembly. It is not a standard pan filter with relatively easy access. The internal Maxima filter for the RE4F02A transmission is ATP part #B157.
inside the transmission
Inside the transmission under the pan.
