Wilke339's answer:

This is not a job for the novice mechanic.

Watch videos on YT and other places about how to do it, buy an inexpensive copy of the factory service manual online.

Remove the Power Steering pump and alternator. Remove the dipstick tube. Remove the two bolts from the upper timing belt cover. Raise vehicle, remove left front wheel.

Remove the rubber cover from the inner part of the wheel well to access the crankshaft pulley bolt. The engine must be immobilized before the bolt can be removed. Remove the torque converter cover plate and shift cable cover plate and use a pair of vise-grips to tightly grab the starter ring gear. Absolutely do NOT grab the $95 harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley with the vise grip, the fragile edge will chip right off. Remove the 19mm bolt from the harmonic balancer/crankshaft pulley. It's torqued to 260 ft. pounds, you'll need 1/2" drive tools, a breaker bar and long pipe.

Once the bolt is removed, the pulley comes right off, no puller required. Remove the five 10mm bolts from around the edge of the lower timing belt cover, two top, three bottom. Remove the 14mm nut from the center of the cover (this holds both belt tensioners in adjustment.) The cover can then be maneuvered down and out of the car.

Use a scrap of 1 x 2 wood to jam between the oil pan and the front-to-rear cradle crossmember link. Remove the driver's side engine mount. I generally like to unbolt the bracket for it from the engine, although that isn't necessary, I like having room and being able to see.

Remove the vise grip from the torque converter ring gear. Place the crank pulley back on (don't bolt it), and rotate the engine to top dead center. (see manuals and illustrations) Remove the crank pulley again. Mark the belt and pulleys with paint. Be sure and mark the oil pump and balancer shaft pulleys and belt too. If these are moved while the belt is off, the engine will run rough as it will be mechanically out of balance.

If your belt is broken, watch videos/read manuals about how to align the balancer shaft to TDC. The oil pump pulley has a mark on top and it's easy, but the balancer shaft is not as easy as that.

Install the new timing belt and balancer shaft belt. Before proceeding, check your work by installing the the crank pulley and bolt. Plug the alternator in, making sure not to ground the positive terminal. Start the engine, make sure it runs well and does not vibrate. Immediately shut it back off, remove the alternator and crank pulley.

Assemble the engine in the normal way, don't forget the engine mount bracket first! Then the lower timing cover, crank pulley and bolt, engine mount, upper cover, alternator, power steering pump, belts, etc.

How do you install timing belt on a 1994 vw eurovan 2.5 liter?

To install the timing belt on a 1994 VW Eurovan with a 2.5-liter engine, first, ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) by aligning the timing marks on the crankshaft and camshaft. Remove the old timing belt and any necessary components, such as the timing cover. Install the new timing belt, ensuring it is properly tensioned and aligned with the timing marks. Finally, reassemble any removed components and double-check the alignment before starting the engine.
