It is an interference engine. Severe engine damage will occur if the belt breaks. The belt should be changed every 60,000 miles.

Do not believe the previous post. Your Mazda engine is a Non-Interference engine....the belt can break....replace the belt and tensioner (with Mazda OEM parts only -trust me on this) and you are good to go. There will not be any related valve damage.

Note: Some manuals do indicate incorrectly 89-98 MPVs are an interference engine...This is not true; says I, a certified mechanic.
