The Mazda B2000 was equipped from the factory with mechanical lash adjusters. These need to be adjusted about once a year to maintain proper lash between the lash adjuster and the valve tip. To get to the rocker arms remove you're valve cover. In order to make an adjustment the cam follower must be on the base circle of the came lobe. Turn the engine clockwise until the cam lobe for the rocker arm you are trying to adjust is pointed straight down. Then loosen the lock nut and back off the adjuster with a flat head screw driver, insert the feeler gauge between the adjuster and valve tip. Slowly tighten the adjuster while wiggling the feeler gauge until it is snug to move. Then carefully hold the adjuster steady with the screwdriver as you tighten the lock nut with the wrench. Set the intake rocker arms for .007" lash and the exhaust side for .008"
After you are done turn the engine clockwise two full revolutions and then check to make sure on the intake side you can fit the .007" feeler gauge but not the .008". Do the same for the exhaust side making sure you can fit the .008" but not the .009". If the larger gauge fits for any rocker arm readjust it turn the engine over twice and recheck.
Some tapping will always be heard with mechanical lash adjusters. The above settings are my recommendation based on professional experience. If set properly to the settings above valvetrain noise and wear will be minimized. The factory recommended setting should be labeled on a sticker under the hood.

hydraulic lifter? Rocker arm?
Mazda had issues with poor oil circulation on the 1986-1990 models and some there after.Short of it is they did offer new valves with bigger oil ports to help fix the tap noise on cold start up.Now the 1986 model does require valve adjustments and the previous post recommended 15,000 miles which should be correct. But running 10w30 and changing the filter every 3000 helps alot.I would get the valves adjusted and do the normal service there after.Mazda has had this issue and even with my 87 it does it from time to time with the retro fit job done to it.Best suggestion and information I can offer after owning mine for 23 years.
Check the axle; it may be leaking/out of grease.
A tapping noise in a 2002 Camaro could indicated noisy lifters. Make sure that the oil level is full, and the oil is clean and recently changed. Lifter quieting additives can help reduce the noise some.
The distinctive sound produced when tapping a wine glass is a clear, high-pitched ringing noise.
hey man i got a 2000 mercury cougar v6 it is makeing a tapping noise under my manifold, and i dont know what that could be. but it sounds like you might be haveing the same problem im haveing. suggestion: try checking where that tapping noise was again, it might be under your manifold!.
A tapping noise might come into the engine because of heat damage to the lifters of the motor. You might also hear a tapping sound if the engine has been damaged due to a blown head gasket.
Stuck hydraulic lifter.
try checking the lifter(s)
