According to my brother (who is a mechanic), The stock stereo in the protege requires radio removal tools (2 sets) to remove -- you can get them at just about any parts store. Just carefully remove the molding around the radio, insert the tools all the way and then pull them outward to release the clips. The radio should just slide out.

I do not believe it is. I know the stock stereo from the 2006 Mazda 3 does not support mp3 cds.

Remove the plastic trim panels to the left and right of the stereo with your fingernails or something that will not scratch the plastic. This will reveal four holes on each side. At a Radioshack type store you can buy DIN removal tools. But for a Double Din stereo you will need to buy two such packages. The instructions come with the package.
well it depends on your year, and if it is an lx dx, or es. The lx and dx for 1995-1998 protege's are 13" stock. The es i believe is 14". If you are looking to put new rims on the protege, the biggest ive seen go on a protege was about 17" but that might even be close to rubbing.
