It is just the heat shield on the bottom of the cat that rattles. As to whether it is critical to proper vehicular function.. :/ Idk, I wouldn't think so. Might ask a real mechanic, not a shade tree mechanic though. Right now, I just let it rattle on my '01.
The catalytic converter should be bolted onto the exhaust pipes. The bolts will have to be soaked in penetrating oil to be able to break them free, then you can replace the converter.
As long as the vehicle is kept in good running order the catalytic converter should last the life of the vehicle.
No, replace the converter with a new one. Anything else is illegal.
i got estimate of 600 $
should be right above the catalytic converter, on the exhaust manifold
If the catalytic converter is defective more than likely the O2 sensor is defective.
It should last the life of the car if you maintain the car as you should. Let the engine start running rich and do nothing to repair this condition and it will destroy the converter. But keep the engine tuned up and running as it should and you will never have to replace the converter. NEVER had a problem with my 1996 HONDA ACCORD engine and CATALYTIC CONVERTER needed to be replaced at 220,000 MILES.
A OEM converter should bolt in exactly like the original, an after market may have to be cut and welded in.
Can? Yes. Should you? No. It is illegal to drive a car that came equipped with a catalytic converter without one. There is no benefit to removing a converter from a modern car.
A catalytic converter should NEVER go bad unless something causes it such as a RICH or a LEAN condition. What is a "RICH OR A LEAN CONDITION"?
Yes and No. A dealer should not be able to sell a car without a catalytic converter. However, the dealer should assume that every car it purchases has a catalytic converter. Therefore, if the dealer was unaware, then the dealer has no liability in selling a car without a CAT. Ultimately, the liability lies in the individual whom removed the catalytic converter in the first place.
The converter will cost from $275 to $325 depending on where you buy it. Labor to remove the old one and install a new one will be around $100.
