Trouble code P0420 means:Catalyst system efficiency below threshold (bank 1)
The P0420 code on a 2005 Nissan Xterra indicates a problem with the catalytic converter's efficiency. To fix it, first, inspect the exhaust system for any leaks and check the oxygen sensors for proper operation. If the sensors are functioning but the code persists, the catalytic converter may need to be replaced, as it could be clogged or damaged. Additionally, ensure that the engine is running optimally with no other issues that could affect emissions.

I also have a "service engine soon" code P0430 showing in my 2001 Tracker 4 wheel drive. I need to know what this code means so I don't have to pay for the diagnostics test again to fix it. My car is overheating when it idols and I'm unsure if the engine fan is going out or if this is due to the P0430 code.

You assumed that Code PO420 Catalysis System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1) meant the converter was bad? Not necessarily so. It can be an exhaust leak, defective O2 sensor on bank 1, engine coolant sensor is defective, leaking fuel injector, cylinder misfire, or problem with wiring on O2 sensor.
It's Catalyst system efficiency below threshold
