The diagnostic trouble codes P2187 and P2189 indicate that the engine is running too lean, meaning there is an insufficient amount of fuel in the air-fuel mixture at idle. This can be caused by issues such as vacuum leaks, a malfunctioning fuel system, or faulty sensors. P0441 refers to a problem with the evaporative emission control system, indicating a malfunction in the purge flow during operation. Together, these codes suggest that there may be multiple issues affecting your vehicle's fuel and emissions systems that need further investigation.
Sell the car.
2187-Too lean at idle-bank 1. 2189-too lean at idle bank 2. 1071- VVT module-internal malfunction. 1065-VVT timeout/no signal.
Code P2187 is explained as " System too lean at idle, bank 1". Directly from OBD II Techbook. Meaning, there is too much air or not enough fuel in the air/fuel mixture. There are a few things that this could be. You need to see how your car is acting at this time when that check engine light comes on and gives the P2187 code. Probably stuttering and/or stalling. I've seen something as simple as a faulty o-ring in a gas cap cause this code. Aftermarket and locking gas caps sometimes don't work well with Volvo's. Other causes could be bad fuel pressure regulator. You need to find out what the fuel pressure should be when engine is running and at idle. And the pressure when key is on and engine is off. Then test your fuel pressure. Also, possible sticking idle air control valve can cause this code. Even clogged fuel filter will give that code. Good luck.
I have found numerous reasons that this Code P2187 could trigger the CEL. Your car probably has a rough idle to stall right? First do the cheapest fix first. 1. clean out your MAF sensor 2.Check for leaks in the Vaccum hoses around the throttle body and Air filter housing. and the intake manifold with carb cleaner. While doing this if your idle goes to normal you have found the leak. 3. Disconnect the negative battery cable to reset the code. 4.Check your purge valve. 5.Check the wiring for cracks in the connector to the MAF sensor. 6. If all of these things dont help you diagnose the problem DO NOT BUY AUTO PARTS UNLESS YOU ARE SURE THEY WILL FIX THE PROBLEM. Trust me I know. I am dealing with this right now. After work I will try to locate a vaccum leak. This is the last step that I have not checked.
