If you depresed the brake pendal, and play with the gear shifter while its in park, you will notice there is no suare light as in all the other gears, move and play with the shifter while in park, untill you notice the park indacator comes on, and key will release. i'm having same problems, was told may need ignition barrel bye one then told need to replay compleat ingnition system bye another, lucky after looking into it more, was told about the auto gear shifter, havnt had it repaired as yet, but apprently theres a solenoid / switch to click the gear shift into park, if you change your gears into park you can hear it click, that needs to be replaced, if my sistution it also seems to be drain my battery, as my battery has goon flat , after leaving or not driving the car for a few day.. at least im hoping thats the reason...........i just couldnt get the keys out of the ignition... hope this helps someone who has same problems.. cheers

A lot of Mazda' s will do that. It has nothing to do with the brake. You need to crack the wheel. What I mean by that is to pull the stering wheel hard left, then hard right until the shifter unlocks. Some times this can takes some time but its the only way to free up the shifter. My self and my son between us have had 6 Mazda's and at any given time one of them has been stuck in neutral. The first day I picked up my new Mazda truck it did it, I called the dealer in a panic, he told me to do this (in 1989) and it has never failed. I love my Mazda.
