It means the computer has a code available to alert you to something that needs to be checked. It could be something simple and common, like a non-sealing gas cap that needs to be replaced. If the light is flashing while driving, it is a more serious problem that needs immediate attention, like an overheating catalytic converter system.
Many places, like AutoZone (no endorsement), will bring a code reader out to the parking lot and get the code for free.

On my 2005 Element it goes like this. Turn off engine. Press and hold the Select/Reset button on the instrument panel, then turn the ignition switch to on. Hold the button for about 10 seconds until the indicator light goes out.
Could be low oil level, something wrong with the car's computer system, an oil sending unit...the list goes on..... Depends on which light is on. If it is the Check Engine light then there is a problem that is effecting the emissions system. Have the ECU scanned with an OBD2 scan tool.
