The 1998 Nissan Owners Manual for the vehicle says, 0.039" to 0.043" or 1mm to 1.1mm.

its a Nissan for starters but it could be the plug wires or the plugs or the distributor
The Nissan frontier would most likely have their spark plugs down deeper into separate chambers. If it is anything like new ford model trucks you have to locate the wires covering them, about an 8 in extention and a 5/8 in spark plug socket.
The spark plug gap for a 1998 Nissan Pulsar with the 1.8L L4 is .044-inches. The Nissan OE plug for this application is the NGK Laser Platinum part#4045.
Don't know if this spec is for all brands, but for Bosch brand, it's .044"
