If it has a round knob w/ button in center, the shaft is froze or rusted. Either case the knob has to be removed. I think there is a solonoid in thr shifter base , when the brake pedal pushes it unlocks the shifter. Try good luck, something connects to the shifter Cavaliers have cables.
