In California, Mazda says every 105k miles. Everywhere else, they say every 60k. The cars timing belts are exactly the same. Crazy California. The good news, if the belt breaks it won't damage the engine (like some cars). It will leave you stranded though. I don't think I've ever seen one break before 60k (like some older Camrys), but maybe a few before 90k. Change the belt rollers and water pump while you're in there. And have the cam position sensor O-ring changed every 60k, they leak like crazy when they get old (really the only place Miatas like to leak oil). The o-ring is cheap and the labor to change it is easy enough while you're doing the timing belt.

What years did the Mazda Miata have a timing belt?

The Mazda Miata, specifically the first-generation (NA) models produced from 1990 to 1997, did not use a timing belt; instead, they were equipped with a timing chain. The second-generation (NB) Miatas from 1999 to 2005 continued to use a timing belt in the 1.8L engine. However, the later third-generation (NC) models from 2006 to 2015 reverted back to a timing chain. Therefore, the Miata models with a timing belt were only the NB variants.

Behind the Timing Belt at the front of the engine. The water pump pulley is the top central pulley on the engine. Removing the Timing Belt is required.

When should you change the timing belt on a 2002 Mazda Miata?

It is good practice to change the timing belt by 100,000 miles. The Miata is a non-interference engine. That means if the timing belt brakes, the car will cease to run, but will not damage the engine as in other cars.Typically the water pump is replaced at the same time, because it is located behind the timing belt, which is labor intensive. If you risk not changing the water pump, when it breaks, you will need to change the timing belt again and you'll have to pay for it to be reinstalled again as well.
