I'm in the process of changing the stereo in my Kia, and pulled the fuse for the 'dinger' when the door is open (all I remember is it is the second one in from the left on the bottom) - I forgot to put it back in, and the car would not shift out of drive. Once the good fuse was back in - shifted normally. Could control the neutral safety switch too - which is a security factor :) Although now I have my own problem of no clock - and not sure where to find that fuse!?
Between your shifter and the gearbox, there is a linkage. A connector is broken.
More than likely the shifter is bad. On the right front of the shifter is a small plastic cover. About the size of a pea. Pull this cover up and inset a small flathead screwdriver in. Push it down and then you should ne able to get it out of park. You will need to do this every time until you get the shifter fixed.

To remove the shift knob on a Kia Rio, first, ensure the vehicle is in "Park" and turn off the ignition. Then, look for a small set screw on the side or back of the shift knob; use a screwdriver or Allen wrench to loosen it. Once loosened, pull the shift knob straight up to remove it from the shifter shaft. If necessary, consult the vehicle's manual for specific instructions related to your model year.

yes it will, all the kia Rio gearboxs are the same up to the kia Rio 2006 models, but if you want to put a gear box in a kia Rio, it probably would be best to get it done professionally
