Valve cover gasket, its not gas its a burnt oil smell correct? Common problem.
It might have climate control (some XLE and solara) but I doubt it has dual.
You cannot turn them, at leas not officially. The work around is to remove running light relay.

In the 2002 Toyota Solara convertible, the hazard light switch is located on the center console, just below the climate control knobs. It is typically a red button marked with a triangle symbol. Pressing this button activates the hazard lights, which flash all turn signal lights simultaneously to alert other drivers.
I can't speak for the Gen I Solara but suspect the location is the same or similar to the Gen II. On the '04 and later car the auto headlight sensor is on the top of the dash, driver's side. There are two dark 'bumps.' The headlight sensor is the one nearest the center of the car. The other is for the auto climate control. BTW, the name "twilight sentinel" is a General Motors label. Toyota just calls it an "Automatic Light Control Sensor." Cheers
The wires running in the rear window are the radio antenna. So, to answer the question, in the glass of the rear window.
I don't know the answer, but we have a 2007 Solara & we have the same probem. The Dealer replaced something last week but it still has the same problem. It always seems to work at the dealer. Dave
A guess, traction control on/off.
If only one running light is illuminated on your 2004 Solara when the lights are set to auto, it could be due to a burned-out bulb or a problem with the wiring or socket of the non-functioning light. Additionally, it may be an issue with the vehicle's lighting control module, which manages the automatic lighting system. Inspecting the bulbs and wiring for damage or corrosion can help identify the issue. If you’re unable to resolve it, consulting a mechanic may be necessary.
On a 1999 Toyota Solara, the cruise control relay is typically located in the engine compartment fuse box. To find it, open the fuse box and look for a relay labeled for cruise control or similar. If you have a manual, it can provide the exact location and details. Always ensure the ignition is off before inspecting or replacing any relays.
the name solara means queen of the sun
Just press the Trac Control switch on your dash. It toggles traction control on/off. The location of the switch is shown in your owner's manual. Cheers
