that is a great ? and hard figure out because it could be 1 of many reasons. i reacently had this happen to me and it took mechanics 2 months to figure it out imagine that! it was a stopped up radiator. but in addition to that it could've been blown head gasket, a fuse, a sensor, water pump, plugged heater core for anyone out there that has a 97 protege if it is overheating DO NOT drive it if it's running more than 20 degrees above normal temp. the darn thing has plastic rings. good luck
