To change the bulb on the gear shift of a Mazda 6, first, ensure the vehicle is turned off and in park. Carefully remove the gear shift knob by twisting or pulling it off, depending on the model year. Once exposed, locate the bulb socket, twist it counterclockwise to remove it, and then replace the old bulb with a new one. Reassemble the gear shift by reversing the removal process and test the new bulb to ensure it works.
The shift interlock on a Mazda 6 is typically located within the gear shift assembly. It is part of the mechanism that prevents the driver from shifting out of the "Park" position without pressing the brake pedal. Accessing it usually requires removing the center console or the gear shift cover, depending on the model year. If you're experiencing issues with the interlock, consulting the vehicle's manual or a professional mechanic is recommended.

If a Mazda 6 with the Sport Mode feature (shows as M on the shifter) won't go into drive, can it be safely put into M to be driven? How far can it be driven in M without having to shift into another gear?

The shift lock in a 2005 Mazda 6 is a safety feature that prevents the transmission from shifting out of Park without pressing the brake pedal. If you are unable to shift out of Park, check if the brake pedal is fully depressed, as the shift interlock system requires it to be engaged. If the issue persists, there may be a problem with the brake switch or the shift lock mechanism itself. In such cases, consulting the owner's manual or a professional mechanic is advisable.
Unscrew the shift knob. squeeze the plastic underneath - there are 4 tabs holding it in; it will lift out. There are a few more sections that will come out similarly - your entire console will come out that way. There is a great video on how to do this here. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9pggHl_sCOo
the sensor is behind the timing belt cam gear.
