Until observations and experiments conflict with the theory
until it becomes proved
Patterns offer clues as to what is going on. The clues lead scientists to make a hypothesis, a tentative explanation that accounts for the observed pattern. The hypothesis then gets tested, sometimes in ingenious ways. If the hypothesis holds up, you may have a working theory on your hands. The theory would be the best current explanation for the pattern. If you can explain the pattern, you have the answer to a scientific question. If the theory is good, it will lead to other possibilities that have not yet been observed. And if the theory is excellent, these unobserved possibilities will eventually be detected. These new observations will be considered strong evidence in support of the theory's soundness.

One currently accepted theory of the Moon's creation is that it was ejecta from the earth after an impact with an asteroid or comet.
The Big Bang Theory
A theory can offer explanation for an observed phenomenon that is supported by extensive data.
a scientific theory is a description of an observed phenomenon while a scientific theory is an explanation of an observed phenomenon
A law is the description of an observed phenomenon. It doesn't explain why the phenomenon exists or what causes it. It doesn't change. A theory is the explanation but those can and do change.
Both a hypothesis and a theory offer an explanation of some observed phenomenon. The difference is that a hypothesis must have confirmation to become a theory.
Theory
A Hypothesis is a statement that may or may not be true; in essence, a theory. Knowing that, testing a Hypothesis means to test a theory that was made about a certain event occurring or not occurring.
A theory is a widely accepted explanation based on experimental results.
law and theory
In the general, every day sense of the word a theory is a supposition, a hunch or a speculation. It is unproven.A Scientific Theory is completely different from an every day theory. A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis that has been supported with repeated testing and with facts that can be observed and/or measured. With that support a hypothesis moves to the next step in the scientific method and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon. Facts are the framework for the scientific method and a Scientific Theory is supported by facts.
That means that most people would agree to it.
Theory.
A scientific theory summarizes a hypothesis or group of hypotheses that have been supported with repeated testing. If enough evidence accumulates to support a hypothesis, it moves to the next step; known as a theory; in the scientific method and becomes accepted as a valid explanation of a phenomenon.
