Firsts, the power to propel any object into space would have to be much grater than the one used now. Second , doing so would make that object so much hotter than if it flew in an angle to deflect heat. Going straight up would incinerate the object due to the extreme heat cause by friction.

What is an orbit and why do objects stay in them?

Objects in space go around other objects, in elipses. They stay there because of the forc of gravity of the central object. Without it, they would go away, in a straight line.Objects in space go around other objects, in elipses. They stay there because of the forc of gravity of the central object.
