I have just had one go on me, so feel in a good position to answer this.
Car - 53 MG ZR 1.4 105bhp.
The car had been sitting for a few months. When i started using it again, i discovered a loud rattling noise when i depressed the clutch pedal. However the clutch was still peforming well.
within about a week of very short emergancy driving only, the noise had developed into a medium level, constant rattle. Increasing in noise with the clutch depressed.
After another couple of weeks, and an essential, longer journey, The noise was quite loud all the time and i could feel vibrations through the pedal.
The other day i tried to use it again, and it died.
I expeirienced a poping sensation through the pedal as i depressed the clutch, accompinied by a rather loud high pitch squeal. I tried to continue for a bit, but found that the biteing point for the clutch had dropped considerably, meaning that the clutch was still riding slightly.
After a couple more corners to get the car back, there was a smell of burning clutch and it had become a bit grindy trying to select a gear.
I done a mechanics college course some years ago, have been tinkering with cars ever scince, and have spoken to a friend in a garage, and everything points to the thrust bearing.
I hope this helps.

A worn thrust bearing on an N-reg GTI Golf can be identified by a few key symptoms. You may notice a grinding or whining noise coming from the engine, particularly when the clutch is engaged. Additionally, if the clutch pedal feels unusually stiff or the pedal vibrates, it could indicate bearing wear. Checking for excessive play in the crankshaft or unusual wear patterns can also help confirm thrust bearing issues.
It will be noisy, squeaking or squealing coming from the trans, and you may feel roughness or vibration through the clutch pedal when holding it in, it may also give you a little extra resistance when pushed.
a humming sound usually heard on cornering, if heard when going left, its the right bearing and vice versa
Worn out main bearings, PCV valve not working. If it is a straight stick then the thrust bearing on the crankshaft may also be worn out letting the crank move in and out.
Sounds like the thrust bearing is worn, gearbox out to change this, may as well change clutch at same time.
If you are talking about the crankshaft then the thrust bearing main cap is trashed. Crank may be worn too. Time for a crank kit / rebuild job if you do it right.
More than likely a worn out thrust bearing. Check your engine against specs.

Assuming your serpentine belt is in good condition... the bearing of pulley could be making noise (or bearing could fail allowing you to jiggle pulley with your hand), and/or tensioner spring is worn out.
And engine knock is normally caused but I worn crankshaft bearing or rod bearing.
