Light is part of the electromagnetic spectrum of energy, and is transmitted in the form of photons. The photons are generated by the process of nuclear fusion, which fuses hydrogen into helium and gives off huge amounts of energy as a by-product, within the sun (or any star).

The photons radiate away in all directions, and since they have no mass, only energy, they are not retarded by the sun's gravity. Gravity only affects mass. Also because they are massless, they can travel at the speed of light, and reach the Earth in about nine minutes.

One interesting aspect of photons has to do with Einstein's General Theory of Relativity, which states that time slows down as one approaches the speed of light, and stops when you get there. In other words, Time does not exist for a photon, and this is why they do not weaken or fade even after journeys of millions of light-years. For the photon, no time passed at all!

What color are most of the photons that leave the Sun's surface?

The majority of photons leaving the Sun's surface are in the visible spectrum, with a peak intensity in the green region. This is why the Sun appears white when viewed from space, as it emits light across all visible wavelengths.
