Ursa Major means "Big Bear" Ursa means Bear, and Major means large. Ursa Minor means Ursa as in Bear and minor as in small. These names either came from the Greeks. In the U.S.A., Ursa Minor and Ursa Major are Little Dipper and Big Dipper.

The Greeks looked at the two and said, "Those stars look like a little bear and a big bear" That's how Ursa Major and Ursa Minor got there name. Now, people in the U.S.A. thought that the Ursa Major and Ursa Minor looked like dippers. Scientists call them Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, I personally call them Ursa Major and Ursa Minor, but some children and adults call them Little Dipper and Big Dipper and that's how they got there name.

Who discovered the Ursa Major?Answer

The constellation Ursa Major exists only in the minds of the human beings who, seeing a "shape" in the night sky that reminded them somewhat of a bear, gave it the name "Big Bear". That was about 2,500 years ago, so that's how "old" Ursa Major is.

The separate and distinct stars that appear to form this shape in the sky are of various ages from one to several billion years old.

The seven brightest stars of Ursa Major form the asterism known as the Big Dipper in the United States and Canada, or the Plough in the United Kingdom and Ireland.

In that section of the sky there are countless stars (thousands in our galaxy alone and hundreds or thousands of galaxies with millions or billions of stars each. Just as there are in most directions).

Ursa Major is a constellation in the sky, and it's there all year round for the Northern Hemisphere. Ursa Major means 'great bear'. There's a Greek story about it. Basically, the Goddess Artemis had these Hunters, and to be a hunter, a girl would have to swear to be a virgin for life. There was this one girl, Callisto, who was a hunter of Artemis, and she had an affair with Zeus, and got pregnant. Artemis found out out threw her out of the hunters. Callisto wandered around some woods and had her baby boy. Then, Hera, Zeus's wife, found out about Callisto's affair, and in her anger, turned Callisto and her baby boy into bears. Zeus felt quite bad about this, so he put Callisto and her son in the stars, and they became 'Ursa Major' and 'Ursa Minor' (great bear and little bear). Hera was angry about this too, so she made a deal with Oceanus, the Titan of the sea. Oceanus made sure that Callisto and her son could never drink from the sea, so those two constellations never meet the sea, so they always stay in the sky

The name Ursa Major also known as the Great Bear is the best known asterism in the sky. The Great Bear looks to have been assigned to the constellation in antiquity. The myths that surround the reasoning for the bear differs on who one asks.

Ursa Major is a constellation comprising over 100 stars. The nearest is 8.3 lightyears away while the furthest is nearly 6000 ly away. They do not all orbit the same point so their orbital periods will depend on the individual star.
