As you may know, all Muslims pray facing towards the holy city of Mecca- specifically, to the stone monolith known as the Ka'aba in the center of the city. Within cities near Mecca, the direction to face is easy to discern. But for Muslims traveling abroad, or out at sea with no visible landmarks, Muslims looked to the skies to know the direction of Mecca. They knew that the position of certain celestial bodies changed only slightly, so they marked these and used them as skyward markers of their holiest of holy places.

He created the 'Ptolemaic System' which was a widely accepted geocentric model until the introduction of the more simple heliocentric models. He came up with the value of Pi (3.14166). He wrote several Astrology books including the 'Almagest' which is the only surviving comprehensive ancient treatise on astronomy.

Muslim months and holidays are based on a lunar calendar. Predicting and understanding where the moon would be is critical to following those ritual requirements.

Additionally, just like anyone else, Muslims are fascinated by the stars and planets.

___________________________________________________

In addition to the above that fully agree upon, Muslims are required; per Islam teachings; to think deliberately and study all what is around, above, and beneath to discover the blessings of their Creator and recognize His creations and His wisdom. This is including of course astronomy. This explains the reasons behind the Islamic civilization that covered all aspects of life and included amazing inventions in mathematics, medicine, geography, philosophy, agriculture, physics, astronomy, Biology, ... etc.

Ptolemy was the author of two important treatises about the Universe.

In Almagest, Ptolemy defends that the cosmos is spherical, and moves as a sphere; also the Earth is a sphere in the center of the Universe (geocentrism). The Earth does not move at all in his view of the Universe.

The Quadripartitum, is a theoretical work about astrology. Please remenber that astrology study was included in universities during the Renaissance.

Claudius Ptolemy was a Greco-Roman from Alexandria, Egypt.

He was born around the year AD 90.

He was the author of several scientific treatises.

He was known as a mathematician, astronomer, geographer and astrologer.

He wrote the famous astronomical treatise called the "Almagest".

His main contribution to astronomy was a highly developed "geocentric" theory of our solar system.

Unfortunately, like most philosophers of his time, he was wrong about the Earth being the center of the Universe.

Ptolemy believed that it was faster to ask other people your homework questions and wait for the reply than it was to Google the answer yourself. Oh, and something about the sun revolving around the earth.

What was the main idea in the ptolemaic system?

The main idea in the Ptolemaic system was that the Earth was at the center of the universe, with the Moon, Sun, planets, and stars orbiting around it in perfect circles. This geocentric model dominated Western astronomy until it was eventually replaced by the heliocentric model proposed by Copernicus.

When Copernicus first created his Sun centered model of the universe it did not lead to substantially better predictions of planetary positions than the Ptolemaic model?

Copernicus used perfect circles for the orbits of the planets.

Why do scientists not accept the ptolemaic model?

The Ptolemaic model is also known as the geocentric model, where the Earth is at the center of the solar system. Scientists refute this because orbital paths show that the solar system is heliocentric.
