"Each star in a binary system moves in its own orbit around the system's center of mass, the balance point of the system. If one star is more massive than its companion, then the massive star is closer to the center of mass and travels in a smaller orbit, while the lower mass star whips around in a larger orbit." The most massive star will always be the closest to the centre of mass. Imagine a seesaw, now place two objects on either end of the seesaw and move them up and down until it is balanced. The heavier object will always be closest to the centre.

Does the center of gravity always lie on the body?

The center of gravity always lies within an object, and is the location at which the entire mass can be considered acting at a single point. For a system of more than one object, the center of gravity can lie anywhere between the farthest points of the objects, depending on the distribution of mass. The center of mass is called the barycenter.
