We are nearing the point when the earth is farthest from the sun, aphelion. It was on or close to July 4, 2008. After that time, earth will be slowly getting closer to the sun until January 2 or there about, when earth reaches its closest point to the sun, called perihelion. At aphelion earth is traveling more slowly in its orbit; at perihelion it is traveling a little more rapidly. This is all related to the fact that earth's orbit around the sun is an ellipse and not a circle. Our orbit is close to circular, but it is not a perfect circle. For those in doubt (more than likely northerners who find it hard to believe that our summer is at a time when we are farther from the sun) the earth's seasons are caused by our axial tilt of about 23.4 degrees, and not by relative distance from the sun.
No earth is stuck in place on the axis.
