the asteroid raced across from Mars to Jupiter
The first confirmed case of an asteroid orbiting another asteroid is the asteroid Ida which is orbited by a smaller asteroid orbiting it called Dactyl; other asteroid moons have been found since.
It is amazing to be able to see an asteroid in a telescope.
The asteroid is known as 2012 DA14. It is about 150 feet across.
The asteroid 2020 AV2 has the closest perihelion (closest approach to the sun) of any known asteroid, coming within about 6.61 million kilometers of the sun. This asteroid has an elliptical orbit that takes it very close to the sun before swinging out into the outer solar system.
It came and went on February 15th, it was called 2012-DA14.
