Second Man in Space and Lunar Golfer

Alan Shepard (1923-1998) was a US astronaut and a CDR (later RADM) in the US Navy. He was the first American into space, and the second man in space after Yuri Gagarin of the USSR. He later became the fifth man to walk on the surface of the Moon, and the first man to hit a Golf ball on the Moon.

On May 5, 1961, Shepard flew his Freedom 7 capsule on a sub-orbital space flight as part of the Mercury program. On February 5, 1971, Shepard and fellow Apollo 14 astronaut Ed Mitchell became the 5th and 6th men to walk on the Moon. The reason for the 10-year interval between his missions is that he was treated for an inner-ear condition.
