Neil Armstrong, born on August 5, 1930 in Wapakoneta, Ohio, was a former American astronaut, test pilot, university professor, and a United States Naval Aviator. He is well known as the first person to set foot on the moon on July 20, 1969. He was the son of Stephen Koenig Armstrong and Viola Louise Engel. He has two siblings: June and Dean. As a child, Neil Armstrong wanted to be able to fly airplanes. When he was in school, he studied aerospace engineering at Purdue University. He was also accepted into the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He had a Bachelor of Science degree in aeronautical engineering from Purdue University and a Master of Science degree in aerospace engineering from the University of Southern California. On January 26, 1949, he reported to Naval Air Station Pensacola for flight training. And on August 12, 1950, he became a fully qualified Naval Aviator.
