It was the Polar Lander and Climate Orbiter, not a rover. For both someone wrote part of the program in meters and another person wrote their portion in feet: the Climate Orbiter was 146 kilometers off and burned up. After patching the software on the Polar Lander it mislanded when it was less than 50 meters over the land. It flew 350 million kilometers and missed by only 40 something meters. BUT you have to hand it to them: it's like you flew around the world 2.3 times and landed 1.2 feet from the end of your parking spot.

No, the Mars rover and the Mars Pathfinder rover are not the same thing. The Mars Pathfinder rover, named Sojourner, landed on Mars in 1997 and was the first rover to explore the Martian surface. The Mars rover refers to a series of rovers sent to Mars by NASA, including the Spirit, Opportunity, Curiosity, and Perseverance rovers.

The Mars Rover was created in the early 2000's and made its first trip to Mars in 2003. The Mars Rover is just one of NASA's many projects to explore Mars.
