The English word panorama was coined by Irish inventor and artist Robert Barker around 1789 to mean "a painting on a revolving cylindrical surface". Literally, the word means "a complete view", from pan- (all) + Greek horama (a view), from horan (to look, see).

Used for the meaning of a comprehensive survey (1801), panoramic was first attested in 1813, and panoramic camera was first used in 1878.
