Terrestrial planets are comprised of heavier particles (ie. of higher relative Atomic Mass) meaning they have stronger gravity which leads to higher density planets than the gaseous Jovian planets. A Jovian planet can be thought of as a failed star - it has all the elements needed to fuel nuclear fusion, but not enough gravity to attain the nuclear activation energy required.

So the Sun started as a large cloud mostly comprising of gases, and terrestrial planets were formed from clouds mostly consisting of heavy solids.
