A new moon.
Full Moon.
When the earth is between the moon and the sun, a full moon occurs. In the less common instance when the Earth is between the moon and the sun and all three are in line, a lunar eclipse occurs.
The phase of the moon depends on it position in relation to the earth and the sun. For instance, when the moon is in between the earth and the sun, this is the new of full moon phase.

A lunar eclipse occurs at a FULL MOON when Earth is directly between the moon and the sun!!
The new moon phase occurs when all of the side of the moon facing Earth is facing away from the sun. This means that the moon must be at least roughly between Earth and the sun. A solar eclipse occurs when the moon passes directly between Earth and the sun, thus casting a shadow on Earth.

The new moon phase occurs when the moon is positioned between the Earth and the Sun. During this phase, the moon is not visible from Earth since the illuminated side is facing away from us. It appears as a dark silhouette against the bright background of the Sun.
