An asteroid. There are many of these between the orbits of Jupiter and mars. Diagrams usually show a large mass of them, but in reality there are large distances between the objects. Most are boulder size or smaller, but a few are quite large and have been given names. The largest has been designated a dwarf planet (called Ceres) as it is large enough to have pulled itself in to a spherical shape under it's own gravity. Ceres is around 975km in diameter.

Those rocks are called asteroids, and the belt they orbit the Sun on is called the asteroid belt. Here is a list of some named asteroids found in the asteroid belt in order of size:

• 1 Ceres (most massive, and earliest discovered asteroid)

• 2 Pallas (second discovered asteroid after Ceres)

• 4 Vesta (second most massive asteroid after Ceres)

• 10 Hygiea

• 704 Interamnia

The Asteroid Belt, it contains an assortment of irregularly shaped rocky and nickel iron alloyobjects. Most are very small, but a few of the largest asteroids are considered to be Dwarf Planets (e.g. Ceres).
