If, for any reason, earth were to touch the star, it is possible it would be just torn apart by the eddies and curves of the plasma and other phenomena. The surface of the star is not that hot (only 3000K) and it might not melt all of earth. Instead, what was left of earth could enter the star because of it's massive gravitational pull and, if it got deep enough, then be completely vaporized by the truly high temperatures further in. there is the off chance earth's remains would simply be thrown away, pushed by the solar wind, but I know of no scientific conclusion that may decide either way.
Just as a reminder: if this star is in our galaxy, which it is, and it creates a hyper-nova, which it will, the gamma ray burst could be strong enough to kill every single living organism in the entire galaxy. It all depends on the mass of this particular hyper-star. They have been detected in other galaxies where the existing hyper-novas are so strong, satellites here can read them as clearly as they would read a nuclear test on earth.
or
VY Canis Majoris.. would completely annihilate earth, if it were to actually collide with it. It would be as if you stepped on a pollen particle on the sidewalk. But VY Canis Majoris colliding with earth is impossible. COMPLETELY IMPOSSIBLE. Even if went supernova or hyper nova it wouldn't hurt us or our solar system.
and
Note: If thrown at VY Canis Majora, earth would never reach any where near the star. At a long distance, earth would be vaporized and expelled as stardust by the solar wind.
VY Canis Majoris is about 4,900 light years from earth.
Canis Majoris is a red supergiant star that is one of the largest known stars in the universe. It is estimated to be about 1,000 times larger than the Sun in terms of volume, which means it is much larger than Earth. A single pixel representing Canis Majoris in an image of the Solar System would not even be visible when compared to Earth.
VY Canis Majoris is located in the constellation Canis Major. It's not visible on any star maps, but you can locate it in Google Earth by using the link in the related links.
It would swallow Earth. From Wikipedia: "Placed at the centre of our solar system, VY Canis Majoris's surface would extend beyond the orbit of Saturn, although the astrophysicists Philip Massey, Emily Levesque and Bertrand Plez disagree about the star's stated radius, suggesting it is smaller: merely 600 times the size of the Sun, extending past the orbit of Mars."
Canis Majoris is not a star but a constellation. It contains many stars, but the most famous one is Sirius, also known as the "Dog Star." Sirius is the brightest star in the night sky and is easily visible from Earth.
It is difficult to predict exactly when Canis Majoris, or Betelgeuse, will go supernova. It is expected to happen within the next 100,000 years, but could occur sooner or later. When it does happen, it is likely to be a spectacular event visible from Earth.
VY Canis Majoris is about 4,900 light years from earth.
A day on VY Canis Majoris is estimated to be around 1.5 Earth years due to its slow rotation.

Yes, It is is the largest star discovered to date, the fact that we can see it is why we know about it.

Given the fact we are 5000 light years away from VY Canis Majoris, I doubt it would do much damage to Earth. However, Earth could be hit by a large gamma ray burst, but that is unlikely. Also, when the star does explode we will be able to see it from Earth, and it will outshine the galaxy for weeks and months.
No. VY Canis Majoris is a red "hypergiant" star. It would not support life at all. If the Sun were somehow replaced by VY Canis Majoris, the Earth would be instantly vaporized. You might be thinking "but what if it was a planet instead of a star," but the notion of a planet that large is ludicrous; anything that big would instantly collapse into a black hole without heat and radiation pressure from internal fusion to oppose its own gravity.
NO, VY Canis Majoris is the biggest star known to man . This star is also one of the most luminous star ever found . It is red hyper giant in the constellation Canis major . This star is 1800-2100 solar radii in radius and about 4900 light years away from the earth .

It wouldn't exactly "look like" - it would engulf the Earth; that is, we would be INSIDE the star.
