When you are seeing more of the lighted portion of the moon each night, the moon is waxing. When the lighted portion is diminishing, it is waning.
A waning moon
This phase is known as the waxing crescent phase of the Moon. During this phase, the Moon appears to grow thicker each night as more of its lighted side becomes visible from Earth.
The moon changing phases. Phasing as some call it.=====================================A waining moon. (The opposite - when the moon gets bigger each night is called a waxing moon).
The decreasing of the illuminated face of the Moon (full to new) is called "waning." (The opposite, increased illuminated area, is called waxing.)
Waxing. From the new moon (where it isn't visible) through to the full moon (when it is visible from earth as a full circle, all night long). At "New Moon" the moon is between the earth and the sun, so we can only see the dark side (but because it's dark you can't actually see it !). Over the next 2 weeks the moon continues it's orbit around the earth, becoming progressively more and more visible as each day goes by, until we see the "full moon", which is when the moon is on the opposite side of the earth to the sun and is fully illuminated by the sun. Over the following 2 weeks the visible area of the moon reduces, as the moon completes it's monthly orbit of the earth (actually 29.5 days). This is known as waning.

The waxing moon phase is when the moon is transitioning from new moon to full moon, and the illuminated portion of the moon is growing larger each night. During this phase, we can see more than half of the moon's lighted side from Earth.
For the first 2 weeks after the New Moon, the illuminated portion of the moon is larger each night than it was on the previous night, as seen from the earth. These are known as the "waxing" phases.

The largest portion of each Gospel is devoted to what?
Nothing 'blocks' our view of the moon each night.Since the moon is a sphere (the shape of a ball), the sun can only light 1/2 of it, so there's always1/2 of it that's not lighted. We can't see any of that part, even though there's nothing blocking it.
