There was speculation that the sun was at the center as far back as the Ionian Greeks, but there was no proof. Nicholas Copernicus, probably unaware of the Greek hypothesis, formulated a coherent theory that he published posthumously because he was a clergyman and realized the doctrinal ramifications of his work. It it why we call a startling new idea a Revolution in Thought to this day. Yet it was not until the work of Galileo and Kepler, working separately and in different disciplines, that Copernicus's Theory was proven.
