Health-care profesionals who may use the external fetoscope include a nurse practitioner, nurse midwife, and obstetrician.
An external fetoscope resembles a stethoscope , but with a headpiece. It is used externally on the mother's abdomen to auscultate (listen to) the fetal heart tones after about 18 weeks gestation.
Fetal surgical techniques utilizing the endoscopic fetoscope offer early intervention in order to treat such defects before they become serious.
The hearbeat usually heard in an ultrasound about 6 weeks, 12 weeks using fetoscope and using a regular stethoscope about 5 months.
used to listen to fetal heart tones for rate and rhythm. The earpieces and the headpiece allow auscultation (listening) via both air and bone conduction. External fetoscopy is inexpensive, noninvasive, and does not require electricity
The fetoscope is the modern combination of both the stethoscope and the Pinnard Horn. It uses the practitioner's forehead to conduct sound and has a more modern look to he whole device, being made from metal and plastic compared to the wooden Pinnard Horn. It does not use ultrasound. Some practitioner's like to use this at every visit from about week 12, though many won't hear the heart beat that early. This device takes a skill at listening, but when practiced properly a doctor or midwife can tell the baby from a placenta with this device. The sound of the baby's heart beat sounds like a watch under a pillow.
