The Lunar Module could not make the return trip to Earth and the CSM could not land on the moon. As such, the CSM stayed in orbit while the LM traveled to and from the lunar surface.
There was a remote chance that a lunar lander might not be able to take off from the surface. Staying in orbit ensured that at least one of the crew had a good chance of returning in the event of a disaster.
The command module, which housed the astronauts, returned to Earth in moon missions. The command module detached from the lunar module after leaving the Moon's orbit and re-entered the Earth's atmosphere, where it splashed down in the ocean and was recovered.
After serving their purpose during a moon landing mission, lunar modules are typically abandoned in space. They either crash back onto the lunar surface or remain in lunar orbit. Some have also been deliberately crashed into the moon for scientific purposes.
The Apollo 11 mission used the Saturn V rocket to launch the spacecraft into orbit. The spacecraft consisted of the Command Module "Columbia," the Service Module, and the Lunar Module "Eagle." Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin used the Lunar Module to land on the moon while Michael Collins remained in orbit around the moon in the Command Module.
Yes. Michael Collins stayed on the Command Module orbiting the moon, while Buzz Aldrin and Neil Armstrong landed and walked on the lunar surface. He did this because someone needed to maintain the systems on board the Command and Service Modules.

Apollo-Soyuz, made and activated after the phase-out of the Apollo program mated an Apollo command module (US) with a Soviet Soyuz spacecraft in orbit- both craft being manned, and this was sometimes called the summit in the sky. occured in l974 or 75. Do not confuse with Skylab, which used Apollo command modules as access craft.

Without the "Space Travel and Exploration" context I'd have said "Customer Service Manager".However, in this particular category, it probably means "Command/Service Module", the portion of the Apollo spacecraft that returned to Earth orbit from the Moon. (The Service Module was the "rocket" part that was discarded and burned up; the Command Module is the cone-shaped part the astronauts were in that actually landed.)
They got out in space and climbed into the command module. The top of the crafts connected together in space. I wonder how it was possible though, because their suits were so big and it was enough room for the life support units on their back. This answer below is not the correct answer to your question. The command module and lunar module have a docking bay, the Lunar module at the top of the module itself and the command module at the peak of the cone. the command module is the only part of the command/service module and lunar module that actually returned to earth. The lunar modules were jetisoned after the linkup from the lunar excursion and eventually crash landed on the moon. the service module, once separated from the command module burned up on reentry into the earth's atmosphere when the Earth's gravity caused it's orbit decayed enough. Most of the command modules for the Apollo Lunar Missions are housed in the Smithsonian Air and Space museums in Washington, DC and Dulles, VA. although there are a few in other places (Houston, Florida).
They were just not built to do it... too heavy, no legs, etc. Command Modules do not land on the moon. The command module is the main capsule for the Apollo program. The lunar module of Apollo 11 however did land on the moon on the 21st of July 1969.

Neil Armstrong traveled to the vicinity of the moon, along with Edwin Aldrin and Michael Collins, in the Apollo 11 Command Module. Once in Lunar orbit, Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the Lunar Excursion Module, while Collins remained alone in the Command Module. Neither of those modules was an "aircraft".
They fly in a rocket People haven't left Earth orbit since 1972. But, when humans did go to the Moon (between 1969 and 1972), the only vehicles to take them were (boosters) Saturn V rockets, and (spacecraft) Apollo Command and Service Modules (CSM) and Lunar Modules (LM). To date, only NASA astronauts have been to the Moon.
