Why do you need the atmosphere?

Besides the obvious fact that we need oxygen present in the atmosphere and producers in our ecosystems need carbon dioxide as well to make sugars, it offers a protective shell against radiation from the sun, burns up smaller objects that would otherwise reach the ground, water and gases such as carbon dioxide trap heat creating a greenhouse effect and thus optimal temperatures for most lifeforms to live.

The atmosphere also has a weight, which translates into pressure, and having evolved on a planet with one, some biological systems might be affected if that air pressure were removed (massive ear aches would be one immediate consequence). Breathing would also be slightly more challenging, or at least require more energy to pull the diaphram.

The Kármán line, at 100 km is also frequently regarded as the boundary between atmosphere and outer space.
