Like the moon, all the planets get their apparent brightness by reflecting light towards us from the Sun. At some stages Mars is reflecting more light towards Earth, so it appears to be brighter. Also, sometimes it is closer than at other times, so it appears to reflect more light towards us.
Some stars make more nuclear fusion, or just have more energy.
Jupiter is a lot bigger, so it looks brighter even though it is further away. Mars can be quite bright for a few weeks around the time of opposition, which happens every 780 days or just over two years, the next time 22-05-2016.
It is the closest star to us and that is why it looks bigger and brighter.
that's because some stars are closer to the earth; another reason is that some stars get more sunlight than others; another reason IS that the star might not have that much enregy
Depending on the positions of the planets, Mars could sometime be the brightest in the sky. The planet which becomes the brightest overall is Venus - when its in the right place it will be brighter than the brightest star, even visible before sunset/sunrise if you know where to look.
Look up in the sky and you will see. Polaris is actually quite dim, compared to other stars and planets. Even at it's dimmest, Mars is brighter than Polaris.
4 times brighter.

They are different sizes and distances from us, and so they reflect different amounts of light.

No. This is a repeat of a hoax from 2006. At it's nearest Mars will only look about 500 times smaller than the Moon.
How big, how hot (color/amount of energy emitted), how far, light pollution at viewing site

Yes they are. Here are the two Mars rovers who is looking for life on Mars, Curiosity and it's unnamed twin rover which going to be launch in 2020. Others say that other Mars rover like Spirit and Opportunity is looking for life, they are not looking for life. They are looking for water. Curiosity is the only rover who can look for life on Mars.
