Space doesn't have volume because its very definition is the gap between planets, solar systems, galaxies, etc and doesn't have any external limits to the knowledge of the human race.

In fact space IS considered to have volume in modern astrophysics, contrary to old assumptions and text books. Even a good vacuum on Earth has a significant sub-atomic particle density. We have also found high densities in space, increasing towards massive objects and systems. Even in the deepest space we have so far found that there is no such thing as an ideal 'perfect' vacuum.

i.e. Earth's magnetospheric shock, the bow shock of the sun's heliosphere, and even the haloes of galaxies and clusters have massive measurable ion (plasma) densities of up to 10^14/cm^3. When considering properties in terms of cm^3 the quality 'volume' of space is logically implicit. Ergo 'light years' and parsecs now have physical as well as metaphysical distance attributes.
