Gravity has two rules that affect how it works.

The first is how 'big' something is. Scientists and engineers call this the mass of an object. It describes how much 'stuff' there is.

The second thing that affects gravity is how far away it is from something. There is a mathematical rule here called the inverse square law. That means if you double the distance then you halve the effect. If you triple the distance the effect is one third.

Another funny thing about gravity is that it seems to come from the center of a body. So the gravity of the earth seems to be coming from the center of the earth.

The same is true of the moon.

So we take these things together and use a formula to calculate the gravity on a rock on the moon. When we do the sums it shows that though the earth has a stronger gravitational field than the moon overall, because of the distance the strength is much less than that of the moon. Remember the gravity seems to come from the center, and the center of the moon is much closer to the rock than the center of the earth.
