It would be a solar eclipse because the earth revolves around the sun and it takes many years for it to be in a line so the moon could block the light of the sun. ________________ Solar eclipses are rarer, but the questioner may be asking about what it is like to observe such eclipses, and 'would you notice that it is happening?' If that is the question, then probably you would 'notice' a solar eclipse more than lunar. Solar eclipses are quite dramatic and very beautiful. I witnessed one years ago just off the coast of Virginia. It does not become as dark as the middle of the night, but the effect is awesome. There is something wonderful about observing the blotting out of the face of the sun (presuming that you can do so SAFELY), Lunar eclipses are also amazingly beautiful, especially if conditions allow you to see the blood-red glow of the moon while it is in the earth's umbra. But they happen late at night, and if you are not glancing at the moon from time to time, you might miss it altogether, without knowing that anything happened.
