The combined headphone/boom mic, usually have two 3.5mm plugs, color coded green and pink.
Plug the green one into the headphone or speaker output and the pink one into the mic socket.
If the headset has a single 3 ring,(stereo) 3.5mm plug, then it is generally not compatible with computer use.

Listen-only earphones have 3 conductors: the tip of the plug, the sleeve (the longest metal part), and a single ring in between the tip and the sleeve. Not recommended, but yes many earphones will work but give very poor quality sound and probably not enough volume to be useful. Most earphones contain a small coil of wire on a movable form around a small magnet. The current sent from the PC earphone socket through the coil causes vibrations which can be heard. Some microphone inputs will expect an electret condenser microphone and so will not work with a dynamic input.
