From your description it sounds like the headband broke (the part that goes over your head and connects the two earpieces).
First, try taking them back to the dealer where you got them. Headphones should not break like this under normal usage, and it's possible that this kind of failure would be covered by a warranty.
If that doesn't work, look up the manufacturer's website. They might be willing to replace them. Look for a "contact us" link and send them an e-mail describing what happened. If the website allows it, include a photo of the broken headphones.
If none of that works, you will need to try a repair yourself. Just taping the break won't work; tape is not strong enough to withstand the torque of a broken headband. Instead, you will need to use some form of "splint" along with the tape. A metal splint would be best, but plastic will do in a pinch. It should have approximately the same stiffness as the headband. Place the splint so that it covers the crack and extends at least an inch on either side of the damaged area, then tape it in place. It may not be pretty, but it should be functional.
You may have a worn or broken universal joint.
