Televisions are costly enough to make it worthwhile doing some research before handing a credit card to the first salesman you see.

First, the basics:

Pick your budget. There is always a television at a higher price than you expected so decide how much you are willing to spend before you start the search.

Next, have an idea of the size. What might be ideal in a large family room might be way too large in a bedroom.

Work out how many inputs you will need for cable or satellite receivers as well as games consoles, disc players and so on. If you have lots of sources, try to find a television that will handle all of them without having to add more switchers.

And finally...

Go and look at the televisions. Try to see the type of program that you will be watching at home. Is the picture movement smooth? Are the colors natural? does the image please you? Remember that you will spend many hours looking at the screen so it's really important that you buy the television that looks best to you. If it looks good, then it's a good one. I have personally found you get a better picture with a plasma TV. over LED and LCD. Plasma TVs use more electricity than LED and LCD but the picture quality more than makes up for this.
