Edgar Allan Poe never graduated from a college. Poe's foster father, John Allan, gave Poe an excellent education but was a tough taskmaster. When Poe acquired some debts, he and his foster father had a terrible argument and Poe left for Boston. He tried to earn money by selling a collection of his poems, but found he could not support himself. So, he joined the army under the assumed name of Edgar A. Perry. Two years later, with help of his foster father, he received a discharge from the army and enlisted in West Point. Poe thought that his previous army experience would allow him to get through West Point in record time but he was greatly disillusioned when he discovered it would take him four years to graduate. During this time, his foster mother died and John Allan remarried. The rift between the two men widened and eventually, Poe and Allan went their separate ways. Shortly thereafter, Poe was dismissed from the Academy.
