Mark Twain was very creative. His birth name was Samuel Langhorne Clemens. He was creative enough to realize that his real name would not be remembered as well as his pen name of Mark Twain. He grew up on the Mississippi river and worked there when he was younger. This gave him many experiences to draw from for his stories. His pen name of Mark Twain was even from the river. They used a device called a Lead Line to measure the water depth. When they called out the water depth to the captain of the river boat one measurement was "By the mark twain" This came from one of the marks on the line. Each fathom (6 feet) was "marked" with different objects. "by the mark twain" meant two fathoms of 12 feet.
