When he was young, Dahl's half-sister purchased an automobile. Because there were so few cars at this time, road safety was not a big issue, so she didn't really know how to drive. Well, the whole family piled into the car, and they set off. Unfortunately, there was a very sharp turn in the road that she didn't see coming and ended up crashing into a tree. The only person who was seriously injured was young Roald. A piece of glass sliced his nose almost completely off; it was hanging on by only a small scrap of flesh. Fortunately, he was able to get to the doctor before very long, and his nose was sewn back on almost perfectly, if a tiny bit crooked.

For the full story, check out his memoir Boy: Tales of Childhood from your local library. It should be in the children's section, but it's a really fascinating read no matter what age you are.
