There were many events in his life that affected his writing, whether directly or indirectly. He had memories of trees cut down in his neighborhood. He was bit by a spider as a young child. He served in the trenches in World War 1. He had a romantic marriage. He lost his parents at an early age.

I would say yes. Tolkien was orphaned at a young age and he was raised under the guardianship of a Catholic Priest (his mother had become estranged from most of family because of her conversion to Catholicism). Many of Tolkien's central characters are orphaned or for other reasons fostered eg Frodo, Eomer and Eowyn, Aragorn, Elrond, Niniel & Turin. Later he had to overcome various barriers to marrying Edith and he felt their story was a version of the story of Beren and Luthien - so much so that he had their names appended to their own on their grave stone.

Another influence was the landscape around Sarehole Mill near birmingham where he spent some of his childhood.
